About Giraffe Centre
The Giraffe Centre is located in Lang’ata, Nairobi, Kenya. It is a creation of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W. Kenya), a non-profit organization aiming to educate both Kenyan school children and visitors about wildlife and conservation.
The Giraffe Centre was founded in 1979 by Jock Leslie-Melville and his wife Betty Leslie-Melville, to home the Rothschild Giraffe, a subspecies found only in East Africa.
Giraffe Centre was intially started to address the declining population of Rothschild Giraffes due to habitat loss. With time the center has since become a renowned Nature Education Centre and tourist attraction, educating thousands of Kenyan students annually.
The center’s mission is to enhance resilience in sustainable environmental conservation and education, aligning with its vision of a world living in harmony with nature.
Over the years, efforts by A.F.E.W. have led to the successful breeding and translocation of Rothschild Giraffes to various Kenya national parks, resulting in a population of over 300 giraffes relocated to safe areas.
The main attraction at the Giraffe Centre is the opportunity to feed giraffes from a raised observation platform, providing visitors with a close encounter with the giraffes.
Additionally, the center is home to warthogs that roam freely alongside the giraffes, creating a unique and an exciting experience for visitors.
