About The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF)

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), comprising the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy, and Kenya Air Force, was established under Article 241 of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya. Governed by the KDF Act of 2012, its primary mission is to defend and protect Kenya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Recruitment to the KDF occurs annually, and the President of Kenya serves as the commander-in-chief.

The KDF is actively engaged in peacekeeping and warfighting missions, notably the counter-insurgency fight against Al-Shabaab in Somalia since 2011.

MISSION:

To defend and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic, assist in emergencies or disasters, and restore peace in unrest-affected areas of Kenya.

VISION:

A premier, credible, and mission-capable force deeply rooted in professionalism.

COMMITMENT:

The Ministry of Defence is committed to defending the people and property of Kenya against external aggression and supporting the Civil Authority as per the law.
