About Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST)

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), formerly Western University College of Science and Technology, is a non-profit public university in Kenya, named after Masinde Muliro, a Kenyan politician who played a key role in its founding. The university has approximately over 25,000 students spread across its branches: Main Campus in Kakamega Town, Webuye Campus, and Bungoma Campus.

MMUST’s history dates back to its establishment in January 1972 as Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (WECO), founded through the Harambee spirit with Masinde Muliro as the fiery MP and key contributor. Initially, WECO offered certificates and diplomas in technical courses. In 2002, it became a constituent college of Moi University, known as Western University College of Science and Technology. President Kibaki later elevated it to full university status in 2007, retaining the name MMUST.

The university’s mission is to provide excellent education, training, and research by integrating science, technology, and innovation into quality programs.

MMUST’s philosophical framework emphasizes the view that science and technology are indispensable tools for harnessing natural resources for sustainable development. The university believes in a well-conceptualized educational, scientific, and technological package to empower individuals for creative environmental improvement.

The university operates under core values such as customer focus, equity, collegiality, accountability, excellence, innovativeness, and professionalism. MMUST is open to the community, providing access to resources like the library and other facilities.
